CHICAGO (AP) — The mother of a 10-year-old boy who was shot in Chicago says he is in critical condition after undergoing surgery.

Mellanie Washington said her son, Tavon Tanner, started yelling “I can’t breathe” and vomited blood after the boy was shot in his back Monday evening at about 10:15 p.m. He was sitting on the porch of his family’s West Side home. Washington said the bullet damaged her son’s pancreas, intestines, kidneys and spleen, which was removed.

Washington said Tuesday morning at Mount Sinai Hospital that she has “faith in God that he’s going to pull through.” She said after he was shot the boy’s twin sister yelled, “Twin, don’t leave me!” The boy will be in fifth-grade this fall.

Police said they had no one in custody.
