Tuesday marks the 40th anniversary of the Supreme Court ruling making abortion legal. While it remains legal on the federal level, states have issued more stringent restrictions for women to obtain abortions. These moves are gratifying to those who consider themselves pro-life activists. Those fighting for abortion rights-part of the pro-choice movement-continue to fight back on these moves. Four decades after the legal decision, we explore the evolution of activism on both sides of the issue. We talk with Joshua Wilson, author of the upcoming book “Street Politics of Abortion: Speech, Violence and America’s Culture Wars,” which comes out in the fall, about how activists have changed tactics and strategies. We also hear from Kelsey Hazzard from Secular Prolife about her group’s mission to separate the movement from religious and political ideologies, and feminist and reproduction rights activist Erin Matson about how the younger generation is taking up the mantle in the pro-choice movement.
