Preparations for 5G in Chicago have begun.

Workers have been laying out cables and wires around the city, installing equipment for the new fifth-generation cellular network. Billed as a once-in-a-decade upgrade, 5G will provide faster internet speeds and stronger network reliability than 4G.

While most wireless networks haven’t shared details about their specific rollout plans in Chicago, 5G is expected to be available throughout the country by 2019 or 2020. Sprint plans to turn on its 5G network in Chicago later this year.

Chicago Tribune business reporter Ally Marotti joins Morning Shift to discuss the basics of 5G, and how and when Chicagoans can expect to experience the new cellular network.
