We’ve enjoyed cooler temperatures this week, after a heat wave hit Chicago.

Temperatures will heat up again this weekend, with sunshine and cloudy skies in the days ahead.

Carrie Schedler of Chicago Magazine joins the Morning Shift for recommendations on what to see, hear and eat in Chicago this weekend.

What to see

Newberry Book Fair - Browse through more than 135,000 books in 70 categories at the 35th annual Newberry Book Fair, from Thursday, July 25, through Sunday, July 28. Most items are priced at $3 or under. Admission is free and all proceeds support the library.

Chicago Poetry Block Party - Join the fourth annual Chicago Poetry Block Party for a free festival of poetry, music and art at the National Museum of Mexican Art, 1852 W.19th Street. The event is held on Saturday, July 27, from 3-8 p.m.

‘Go Down Moses’ - Visit the first curatorial project of acclaimed author, photographer and Harvard University professor Teju Cole at the Museum of Contemporary Photography at Columbia College Chicago. The exhibit will be held through Sept. 29.

What to hear

Wicker Park Fest - Enjoy one of Chicago’s top-drawing festivals that offers great local food, arts and crafts, a kids’ area, local retail vendors and a line-up of more than 40 bands. The festival goes from Friday, July 26, to Sunday, July 28.

‘Weird Al’ Yankovic at Ravinia - The biggest-selling comedy recording artist in history stops by Ravinia on Sunday, July 28, as part of his Strings Attached Tour. Lawn tickets are $43 and reserved seats start at $80.

Winnetka Bowling League at Schuba’s - Recently signed to RCA Records, Winnetka Bowling League are relatively new arrivals to the Los Angeles music scene. Catch them at Schuba’s Tavern on Sunday, July 28, at 8 p.m. Tickets are $10 and $12 at the door.

What to eat

Superkhana International - Veteran chefs Yoshi Yamada and Zeeshan Shah have been working on opening this new Indian restaurant since 2014, through a series of pop-ups called Bombay Breakdown. They’ve partnered with Jason Hammel of Lula Cafe to bring this new dining spot to Logan Square at 3059 W. Diversey Ave.

The Laurel Room - This seasonal rooftop bar is the second restaurant from the team behind Pacific Standard Time, the award-winning, California-inspired restaurant that opened in Chicago’s River North neighborhood last year. The Laurel Room opens today, July 25, eight floors above the Pacific Standard Time at 640 N. LaSalle Drive.

Wherewithall - James Beard-winning wife-and-husband chefs Beverly Kim and Johnny Clark recently introduced their second restaurant just down the street from their Michelin-starred Korean restaurant Parachute in Avondale. For now, Wherewithall has a four-course dinner menu. But as Schedler says, the eventual plan is to make the restaurant an all-day cafe with coffee, snacks and light eats.
