St. Pio of Pietralcina, who is known as Padre Pio, is one of the most popular Roman Catholic saints. Millions make the pilgrimage every year to visit his remains. The Capuchin monk is said to have performed numerous miracles and to have had “stigmata” – the bleeding wounds of Jesus on his hands and feet. Last week, his body, which normally resides in a small town in southeastern Italy, was moved to the Vatican, where it will remain on display as part of Pope Francis’ jubilee, or holy year celebrations. The move included the institution of a no-fly zone and several hundred additional police officers. We’ll take a look at who he was, the controversies surrounding his beatification and the reasons behind the Pope’s decision to bring Padre Pio to the Vatican with John Allen, associate editor of the Boston Globe and Crux. Allen is the author of numerous books on the Vatican and the Catholic Church. Guest: John Allen is the associate editor of the Boston Globe and Crux.
