While Chicagoan, Amy Maglio, volunteered with the Peace Corps in rural Senegal, she witnessed many barriers that kept girls from going to school. After she returned in 2003, Maglio founded the Women’s Global Education Project (WGEP), which works to remove the economic, cultural and social barriers girls face to get an education. WGEP provides scholarship support, raises community awareness, and fosters family involvement. WGEP now works in 65 villages in rural Senegal and Kenya. We’ll discuss how the Women’s Global Education Project breaks down barriers with Amy Maglio, the organization’s executive director.
