Portland-based photographer Jim Lommasson shot photos of toys, clothing and other personal objects from survivors of war and genocide for a new exhibit at the Illinois Holocaust Museum in Skokie.

Each object is showcased in “Stories of Survival: Object. Image. Memory” alongside oversized photographs by Lommasson with handwritten responses from survivors or their family members.

Lommasson photographed the belongings of those who survived the Holocaust and genocides in Armenia, Herzegovina, Rwanda, Bosnia, Syria, South Sudan, Iraq and Cambodia.

Morning Shift talks with him about his work and the stories of survivors featured in the exhibit, which is open until Jan. 13.
