The South by Southwest Festival concluded earlier this month in Austin, Texas. In addition to the world-renowned film and media conferences that happen at SXSW, many musical artists also debut new work at the music festival there. Catalina Maria Johnson, the host of Beat Latino on Vocalo, just returned from the 9-day event. She discovered some dynamite up-and-coming music starts. In this week’s installment of Global Notes, Catalina shares music from artists including:

  • Kayla Briët, a young TED fellow that weaves several media and indigenous traditions into her music
  • Andrea Cruz, a Puerto Rican composer and guitarist
  • Sudan Archive, a self-trained electronic violinist who isn’t actually Sudanese
