This week Worldview is taking a look at the history of the international scouting movement. 

Today, we look at how the Girl Scouts got their start and what distinguished them from the Boy Scouts, which began in Britain. While Boy Scouts flirted with imperialism and militarism, Girl Scouts emphasized international cooperation and empowerment. 

We talk with Susan Swetnam, a retired Professor at Idaho State University. Her paper in Frontiers, looks at how girl scouting in the United States was seen as subversive for supporting women’s movements and internationalism in the 1950s.
