According to the International Organization for Migration, at least 1,800 people have died while trying to cross the Mediterranean just since January 2015. It’s been called the biggest refugee crisis since World War II and Europe has struggled to find a solution. This week the EU presented a proposal to the UN that aims to stem the flow of people from the Middle East and North Africa. It includes increasing resources for search and rescue efforts as well as several measures that would go after the trafficking networks and smugglers. Kathleen Newland, director of the Migration Policy Institute’s Migrants, Migration and Development program, joins us to discuss the policy changes and the humanitarian crisis in Europe.
