Chicago Public Schools has sent pink slips to more than 2,000 teachers and other staff to help balance the $6.4 billion budget it sends to its board on Wednesday. Some laid off teachers got a chance to be rehired at a recent CPS jobs fair.

A couple of weeks ago, art teacher Sunny Neater-Dubow got canned from her job at the Multicultural Arts High School. But a month before that, she says she saw her position posted on the district’s website with a tweak.

NEATER-DUBOW: It said the Multicultural Arts School is looking for an art teacher with a dance endorsement. That is an endorsement I do not have, and that’s an endorsement that I think is pretty rare. I’ve never known an art teacher with a dance endorsement.

Neater-Dubow says she thinks the district is trying to find less experienced and less expensive teachers to hire.

Schools chief Ron Huberman says the district plans on restoring 400 teaching positions with federal money it expects to get.
