A new Illinois law taking effect on Jan. 1, 2016 will allow police officers who work with dogs to keep them once the dogs have been retired. Chicago police officer Kevin Keel has been working with four-legged colleagues for about 20 years. He said it is already common practice to let department handlers keep the retired dogs but he is glad a law is making it official throughout Illinois.
