The International Cycling Union [UCI] has just appointed a former UN war crimes investigator as part of an independent commission tasked with investigating doping in cycling. The commision also includes a Swiss prosecutor who has investigated organized crime and a German who has overseen doping cases for the Court of Arbitration for Sport. “It’s the first time cycling has ever brought in outsiders with no real stake in keeping the doping issue quiet,” says journalist Mark Johnson. Johnson has covered cycling since the early 1990’s. He’s the author of Argyle Armada: Behind the Scenes of the Pro Cycling Life and a forthcoming book on the broader cultural and economic context of doping in sport. He’ll tell us whether the commission can clean up the sport. (Photo: Flickr/C. Moret’)
