Chicago police are investigating the shooting death of a Chicago Public Schools employee outside of an elementary school. 

25-year-old Denzel Thornton was shot and killed while leaving McNair Elementary school - on the city’s west side - around 12:30 P.M. Thursday afternoon. 

The school was locked down - and parents got a robo -call alerting them to the shooting. CPS officials say the shooting did not have anything to do with the school.

The school district is providing crisis counseling at McNair and at the central office where Thornton worked. There have been more than 13-hundred shootings in Chicago this year.
