By Steve BynumHeartland Alliance International is a Chicago-based non-governmental organization working to advance peace, human rights and civil society in Sudan. One of the group’s primary goals is to include women in the building a just and prosperous future for Sudan, the North African country that was torn apart by years of civil war and sectarianism.
We’re joined by three women from HAI’s Sudan Taskforce on the Engagement of Women. Kamilia Ibrahim Kuku Kura is founder and chairperson for Nuba Women’s Education and Development Association. The group works with marginalized women and children from Sudan’s Nuba Mountains region. Gamar Khalifa Idris Habbani is the Sudanese government’s political development secretary for the Women’s General Union. She also served as secretary of foreign affairs and secretary of human rights, and Huda Shafig is co-founder of Gesr Center for Development, a Sudanese initiative that supports youth in areas of “social justice policies, awareness raising, advocacy, and service delivery in the areas of human rights, gender equality, and democracy.”
