On June 20, 1941, a group of Russian scientists opened up the tomb of Tamerlane, a Mongol chieftain. The scientists wanted to study his remains. Residents warned against it, afraid of what would happen. As it happens, two days after the tomb was opened, Germany launched a surprise invasion of Russia.
