Chicago Public School officials unveiled designs for a controversial $85 million neighborhood high school on the city’s South Side. Renderings for the proposed school in Englewood show an outdoor sports facility and a school-based medical center. CPS CEO Janice Jackson says most kids in the area don’t go to a high school that’s nearby. Some community groups are critical because CPS is closing four severely under-enrolled Englewood high schools this summer. Those kids will have to find a different school next year because the new building won’t open until 2019. The Chicago Board of Education could vote on the plan as early as February.
