Earlier this year Batavia-based Aldi announced an expansion that would include opening 650 new stores in five years. But the budget grocery store didn’t mention that it is also closing some low performing stores. One of those was in the low income south end of Peoria where an Aldi closed last month amid protests from area residents. Some believe this marks a shift for the chain from the lower income neighborhoods that built them to those in higher income areas. WBEZ producer Monica Eng has more on the story.
