Turkey is in political and social crisis.Demonstrations turned deadly this week when a young protester was killed in a confrontation with police. A 14 year old child, reportedly going to buy bread for his family, was put into a coma when he was struck by a tear gas canister. He eventually died. As he heads towards elections, Prime Minister Erdogan has pushed through new laws that restrict internet freedom and he’s fighting off numerous corruption accusations. Stephen Franklin is former foreign correspondent for the Chicago Tribune. These days he works with the Community Media Workshop. Franklin lived in Turkey for a number of years.
