In a new report the Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences says Beijing is ““barely suitable” for living because of the city’s pollution levels. The report comes as the Chinese government announced it has set aside about 1.6 billion dollars to reward cities and regions that reduce air pollution. Judith Shapiro, author of several books on China, including most recently, China’s Environmental Challenges, joins us to discuss the government’s latest efforts to improve the country’s air quality.
