Spiritual beliefs can play an important role in healing for survivors of domestic abuse. But sometimes the messages victims get from their religious leaders do more harm than good. A 2014 survey of Protestant pastors by LifeWay Research found that four in 10 “rarely” or “never” speak about domestic violence. Among that group of pastors who rarely talk about it, 30 percent don’t see domestic violence as a problem in their church. We talk to an abuse survivor, along with a pastor and victim’s advocate, about overcoming harmful messages from some religious leaders, and how spirituality can be an powerful force for survivors.
