In Illinois, nearly 32-,000 adults with disabilities live with parent caretakers over the age of 60.

A new report from the Daily Herald shows Illinois’ budget crisis may be increasing the strain on these caregivers. Non-profit agencies in the area say they’re seeing this strain come out in a disturbing way — parents are becoming violent toward their own children with disabilities.

Marie Wilson is a reporter at The Daily Herald. She’s been investigating the violence in a series called “Caregivers Crisis: When help isn’t enough for parents of disabled adults.” She joined WBEZ’s Lisa Labuz to discuss.
