A referendum in Catalonia on Sunday allowed voters to decide whether or not they wanted to separate from Spain. They voted overwhelmingly in favor of independence. But unlike the recent vote in Scotland, Sunday’s independence vote was unofficial and non-binding. The Spanish Constitutional Court had ordered the official referendum be stopped and the government of Spain considered Sunday’s vote illegal.
