Union members who work for the Illinois state government are voting Monday on whether they should strike. About 30,000 Illinois state employees are members of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees union and are eligible to cast ballots in the vote. The vote comes as AFSCME and Governor Bruce Rauner have been locked in a contract fight. Rauner argues AFSCME workers should put in more hours and be open to merit pay. But the union says Rauner should come back to the bargaining table. WBEZ’s Tony Arnold explains.
