As the U.S. detains more migrants at the southern border, immigration has become one of the hottest issues in American public discourse. In Europe, migrant flows are at record lows, but the governments of several countries are implementing strict new policies to make migration harder. German Chancellor conceded to a rising German right-wing element of her coalition to build “transit centers” to detain asylum seekers. Italy’s interior minister is trying to make the #stoptheinvasion hashtag go viral. To discuss these attitudes, we’re joined by Demetrios Papademetriou, a senior fellow and president emeritus of the Migration Policy Institute (MPI), a Washington-based think tank dedicated to the study of international migration.
