CHICAGO (AP) — Chicago officials are launching a new park safety program modeled after a 2009 effort to help kids in at-risk neighborhoods get to school safely.

The Chicago Sun-Times reports the new initiative is getting $112,500 from the Chicago Park District and will be similar to Safe Passage. Workers for that program wear bright vests and monitor children walking to school.

The new program will employ 150 workers hired by Chicago Public Schools who’ll help children get to and from recreational activities in parks. The program will start this week in 20 parks and be scheduled in late afternoons and evenings around programming for teens.

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel says a worker in the Safe Passage program suggested the idea.
