As we approach the longest night of the year this weekend, folks all over the world will be marking the winter solstice with special foods. A dish that will grace many Iranian American tables is the hot vegetarian, bean, onion and noodle soup called aush. Last weekend Chicago saw its first annual Aush contest launched by artist Amir Normandi. The contest also served as a fundraiser for the springtime Chicago Nowruz Parade, which he also organizes. Normandi talks about the contest, what makes a great aush and how local Iranians will ring in the winter solstice this weekend. (Photo: WBEZ/Monica Eng)
