A new study from DePaul University says loosening rules of the road for bicyclists would make commuting safer for everyone. 

Study co-author Joe Schwieterman said a policy called the “Idaho Stop” allows cyclists to treat red lights like stop signs and stop signs like yield signs. Schwieterman said that would get bikes out of the way of cars at red lights, which is how many bike accidents occur. 

But Schwieterman said he is skeptical the “Idaho stop” will become policy in Illinois because loosening rules for bicycles has never been popular in Springfield.
