Students at Morgan Park High School are mourning the loss of one of their classmates.

17-year-old Tyrone Lawson was shot to death Wednesday. The shooting took place after a fight between rival basketball teams from Morgan Park and Simeon Career Academy. Both schools are on Chicago’s South Side.

The shooting took place outside the Chicago State University gymnasium near 95th street. The university often hosts sporting events for Chicago Public Schools.

On Thursday morning, a few students at Morgan Park were leaving the school earlier than usual.

Shontierra Anderson is a sophomore at the school. She said the atmosphere was not the same.

“Well, the hallways are quiet during passing periods which it’s never at all. There’s a lot of screaming, crying…it’s like everyone is depressed and it’s really a sad sight,” said Anderson.

Some parents at Morgan High School were picking up their children for fear that trouble could continue at the school.

Anderson’s grandfather, Anthony Mars, was urged to pick up his granddaughter as soon as possible.

“I have my doubts about the protection of my granddaughter at school,” Mars said.  “And I think that I would have to be here to support her as far as transportation… because is really outrageous the way this is occurring.”

In a recent statement, Chicago State University said “this is the first such incident to occur on the campus.” The university also said they often provide the required security during high school sporting events.

According to the statement, arrests have been made and university officials are expecting more details about the shooting incident.
