Chicagoan Rory Fanning is a U.S. veteran who served in Afghanistan. In a recent article in the Guardian, Fanning says he believes that instead of celebrating Veterans Day, we should ” replace it with a day that celebrates peace, not war.” In Afghanistan, Fanning served in the same unit as former NFL player, Pat Tillman, who made headlines when he left a lucrative football contract on the table to volunteer in the Army Rangers. Tillman was killed in the field. The Army’s original version of events had Tillman dying by enemy fire. But the story was fabricated and it was revealed that Tillman was killed by friendly fire. When Fanning came home, he wanted to honor Tillman and the rest of his fellow veterans, so he walked across America to talk with anyone he met about his time on the battlefield. Fanning details his adventures in a new book., Worth Fighting For: An Army Ranger’s Journey Out of the Military and Across America. He’ll tell us how he went from a dedicated soldier to an anti-war activist.
