There’s a hole in my wonderful church, a landmark building in Ravenswood recently selected as one of 100 finalists (the only one in Chicago) for the national This Place Matters competition. Sponsored by the National Trust for Historic Preservation, the contest awards up to $25,000 to noteworthy buildings central to their communities. Voting, which runs through June 30, determines the winners.

All Saints’ Episcopal Church does tons. It feeds hundreds of hungry people every single week, offers health counseling to those without health care, mentors low-income kids, supports LGBT equality, and delivers relief efforts in New Orleans and Renk, Sudan. The Ravenswood Run and the church’s bake sales for Heifer International raise thousands of charitable dollars every year. And as a theater critic, I can vouch for the fine quality of its very nontraditional Christmas pageants (let’s just say that Pontius Pilate wears shades).

A gaping hole in the building’s foundation—you can see a picture on the church’s website—is threatening to bring down the whole structure. But with a click or two, you can help change that.
