Kitty Moon on Clark and Thome has been shuttered for many a—well, moon—now. But they left the letters behind; an inviting gold on a field of blue. Why these buildings caught my eye, I do not know. But it caused me to take a look at the building and the two neighboring storefronts on Clark Street

To the left, beneath the hand-lettered Carnitas el Gallito la Mexicana sign, three posters touting the new Stone Temple Pilots CD that gets released tomorrow (STP is back together again and are in Chicago this week? Where have I been?) alternate with posters of next month’s Spin magazine cover with STP’s Scott Weiland. To the right are posters for the upcoming comedy “Get Him to the Greek.” I was going to write “probably unfunny comedy,” but after looking the trailer, maybe there are some laughs there:

Next door is this mid-century beauty which just became—right now—my new favorite sign in the city. I’m going to guess those are porcelain enameled steel letters sitting atop those blue metal panels. Look like they went with Times Roman for the most part, then switched to Brush Script for the last line. No doubt the sign conveyed modernity and efficiency when it was erected. Still looks pretty cool now, even with the missing panel to the right:

Together, the three establishments are an interesting display of text and graphics. And all within about 30 paces of each other.

(And thinking about it a bit…the trailer for “Get Him to the Greek” reminds me of 1982’s “My Favorite Year” with Peter O’Toole),
