ISIS forces have taken control of the ancient Syrian city of Palmyra. Palmyra, which is often called “the pearl of the desert,” is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. There is concern that ISIS will destroy the site and sell off artifacts to finance its fighting. The head of the UN’s cultural body UNESCO has called the ancient metropolis “the birthplace of human civilisation” and says “It belongs to the whole of humanity and I think everyone today should be worried about what is happening.” Tens of thousands of civilians are also reported to be trapped inside the city. We’ll take a look at what’s at stake in Palmyra with Patty Gerstenblith, director of the Center for Art, Museum and Cultural Heritage Law at DePaul University and McGuire Gibson, a professor at the University of Chicago’s Oriental Institute.
