While thousands of people will be out Friday fighting crowds for the best holiday shopping deals, a group of young men will be taking part in a less hectic exercise. They’ll be attending an open house of sorts at Mundelein Seminary in Chicago’s northern suburbs for something called Who Will Fill These Shoes? It’s the first step in the recruitment process for the priesthood put together by the Archdiocese of Chicago. The Catholic priesthood is a vocation that’s seeing lots of aging out and the ranks of would-be priests isn’t what it once was. The Archdiocese created the event two years ago and Father Francis Bitterman, Vocation Director at the Archdiocese, is the man in charge. He talks about the challenges facing the church in filling the shoes of former priests. And we hear from Hank Lyon, a current seminarian who attended the first Who Will Fill These Shoes gathering.
