We the Graduates: A commencement speech by the Class of 2020

WBEZ is collecting answers from high school seniors from across the Chicago area to the questions below about the last four years. We will then string them together to make a community commencement speech that will air on WBEZ 91.5. Thank you for participating and congrats!

Deadline for submissions is Sunday, May 31 at 5 p.m.

Instructions before making the audio recording to send to WBEZ:

  • Check out this video for tips on making an audio recording on your cell phone.
  • Upload your audio recording here or send it to WeTheGraduates@wbez.org.
  • At the start of your recording, introduce yourself by saying: My name is XXX, identify your school and where it is located, share your Instagram handle, and, if you want, your plans for after graduation.
  • Record up to five sentences for each question.
  • Speak as if you’re talking to a friend; make your answer conversational (don’t read your answer please).
  • Please answer the questions in complete sentences and include the essence of the question. For example, for the question “What is one thing you’re not going to miss from the last four years and why,” please provide an answer something like: Here’s one thing I won’t miss from high school — stinky gym clothes.

Questions for 2020 graduates:

You can answer any or all of the questions below.

Start your recording with a message to 2020 grads with something like: “Class of 2020, we did it!” or “Class of 2020, no one will ever forget us because XXX.”

  1. What is one thing you’re going to miss most from high school and why?
  2. What is one thing you’re NOT going to miss from high school and why?
  3. How are you different than when you started school four years ago?
  4. What is one thing people should know about finishing high school during a pandemic?
  5. Commencement speakers always give advice to graduates: What advice are you giving yourself and what advice do you have for the rest of us?

WBEZ will aim to include as many seniors as we can but we can’t guarantee every submissions will be included.
