AT&T is lobbying for a new state law that could allow the company to drop traditional landline service, which the company argues would allow it to modernize faster. Consumer groups opposing the bill say 1.2 million customers still use traditional landlines. A version of the bill passed a senate committee on a unanimous vote last month. More than half of Illinois state senators are co-sponsors.
