It’s June 1992. You’re in the toy aisle in the Kmart in Naperville picking up a birthday present or something for the kids Muzak is piping through the PA system. In between the muzak tracks, there are announcements and blue light specials. Back then, Kmart employees threw out these cassette tapes at the end of the month. But Mark Davis of Aurora worked at Kmart in the late 80’s and early 90’s, and he saved these tapes for years. He recently shared digitized versions on InternetArchive.org, where they became a viral hit. We also speak with the man behind KMRT Radio, which played in the stores. Lee Rutherford founded the station and voiced the announcements.
