Author Tracy Chevalier is best known for her novel Girl With a Pearl Earring, which was adapted into the film starring Scarlett Johansson and Colin Firth. That story takes place in 17th century Holland and centers around Dutch painter Johannes Vermeer and his young muse.

In her latest historical novel At the Edge of the Orchard, Chevalier takes us back to a very different time and place: The muggy stagnant swamps of northwest Ohio in the mid-19th century. It’s a tale of tumultuous pioneer life, the California Gold Rush and trying to establish roots.

Where Girl With a Pearl Earring featured the real-life character of Vermeer, this new book tells the story of the real Johnny Appleseed.

Tony Sarabia sits down with Chevalier to talk about the book and her craft.
