When Ayad Akhtar premiered his play “Disgraced” at American Theater Company in 2012, nobody knew it would move on to long and successful runs on Broadway and in London, and end up winning the Pulitzer. And nobody had any idea that a play dealing with Islam, the West, politics and personal identity in a post-9/11 world would become even more relevant as ISIS gained in strength by recruiting young people from Europe and the U.S. Now, ‘Disgraced’ returns to the city where it began as the Goodman theater mounts the piece and readies it for a national tour. Ayad Akhtar joins us to discuss.
