Each year in early December the Dutch celebrate St. Nicholas Day with ginger cookies, town parades and shoes left out for ‘Sinterklaas’ and his helper ‘Zwarte Piet’ (Black Pete) to fill with gifts and sweets. Zwarte Piet is usually portrayed by white Dutch people in black face. After a statement from a UN committee and an official hearing on the topic by the mayor of Amsterdam, this year Zwarte Piet’s racialized history has come under increased scrutiny.
