Last week Bulgaria’s largely peaceful protests, which had been ongoing for more than 40 days, turned violent when protesters barricaded lawmakers inside Parliament and police attempted to break through the barricade. Bulgarians are upset by what they see as rampant corruption in their government. Robert Castle, a Ph.D. candidate at the City University of New York Graduate Center, and former lecturer at the American University of Bulgaria just returned from Bulgaria.
