The Burkini (Burqini) is a swimsuit that opened up possibilities for Muslim women who want to go to the beach, while not violating their religious traditions of dress.
After a series of terrorist attacks, French cities like Nice and Cannes have banned the clothing, citing violations of France’s secular norms. Italy refuses to impose a ban. There are also reports around Europe of women being harassed and exiled from public establishments for wearing the Burkini.
