Would public schools collectively improve if everyone participated in the system? Slate editor Allison Benedikt thinks so. In her column “If you send your child to private school, you are a bad person,” Benedikt argues that if everyone participated in the public system, it would get inherently better. Jacqueline Edelberg, a parent at Nettlehorst Elementary, wrote the book, How to Walk to School, which has been lauded as “essential reading for all elementary school parents and teachers, especially those who have lost their faith in the American public school system and are looking for ways to improve it.” She discusses the article, and what she did to improve her local, public school.
