Candidates challenging Chicago police union leaders are promising a tougher approach to contract negotiations — and the media. Candidates from The Blue Voice slate forced their incumbent counterparts into runoffs for every union office except one, which the Blue Voice candidate won outright. 

A letter to members posted on the group’s blog focuses mostly on bread-and-butter issues like pension benefits and health care co-pays but it also promises to “fight new, unfair disciplinary procedures,” and to “restore due process rights.” For instance, in late 2015, after video of the Laquan McDonald shooting was released, the Police Department moved to confine officers to desk duty for at least 30 days when they are involved in a shooting.
