The Carpentersville Village board last night postponed voting on a plan to prohibit conducting business with or renting to illegal aliens. The proposal would make English the official language of the village, and would fine landlords $1,000 if they rented to undocumented immigrants.

About 2,000 people showed up at last night’s meeting, mostly opponents.

Village President Bill Sarto predicted last night the proposed ordinance would not pass the seven-member board, and for good reason.

“We were notified today by IRMA, the insurance that actually covers villages against lawsuits, that we wouldn’t be covered under this type of a situation because it could be discriminatory. We were told by the person that handles our bonds that our bond rating might go down,” he says.

Similar ordinances in three other states have all been challenged in court.
