The Chicago Housing Authority wants to demolish one of its properties on the city’s Southwest Side.

CHA wants to teardown LeClaire Courts at a cost of about $5.5 million. Officials are asking the federal housing department to kick in some money. Demolition would start in early 2010.

LeClaire is off of Cicero Avenue near Midway Airport – a curious location for a mixed-income development.

William Little is with the CHA.

LITTLE: You can’t judge it on what’s around there now. You’ve to look at how it would fit in to the north and south of it. And we think it’s a great site.

Little says the plans may include a commercial retail component. A working group is being formed to determine what the site will look like.

So far the CHA is committed to 300 public housing units. The CHA says all of LeClaire residents have been relocated.
