Grammy-winning artist Chance the Rapper endorsed Amara Enyia for Chicago mayor Tuesday morning at City Hall.

Enyia is director of the Austin Chamber of Commerce.

“I want to work with someone who is about change, equity,” Chance said before announcing his endorsement.

“If I back you, you have a chance, absolutely,” he said.

The Chicago-born beats-and-rhymes weaver had signaled late Monday night that he’d be making an announcement “regarding the mayoral election.”

The tweet came right behind a “Maybe I should,” post, teasing the press and raising speculation about a possible bid for the fifth floor of City Hall.

During the press conference, Chance said that the city had not seen a candidate who was “truly an activist — somebody that is going to be active in office.”

“So if you are afraid of change, you are probably not going to vote for Amara,” he said. “But if you are willing to see what this city could be, then you will vote for Amara.”

Since his 2017 Grammy wins in three categories including Best New Artist, Chance has drawn attention with his outreach projects, including donating millions of dollars to Chicago Public Schools and, most recently, raising money for his nonprofit Social Works by working undercover as a Lyft driver in Chicago to encourage riders to donate to CPS arts programs.
