“Charm” is a new play about a transgender woman named “Mama Darleena,” a senior citizen who starts an etiquette class for LGBT kids inside a Chicago community center. The lessons they learn are as much about comportment and table manners as they are about survival in a hostile world. The story was inspired by a real-life Chicagoan named Gloria Allen, better known as “Mama Gloria.” She and playwright Philip Dawkins share the story.
