Chicago alderman are still debating how to draw the new boundaries of the city’s 50 wards.

At issue is how many black and Hispanic-dominated wards there should be in light of new census data. Illinois law says the new map needed to be approved by Dec. 1, but aldermen have yet to come up with a final version.

Mayor Rahm Emanuel maintained on Tuesday that he’s taking a backseat in the negotiations.

“I think all the aldermen know the importance of finding an agreement, because none of them want this to spill out in a way that harms the city’s future, and it won’t. I have all the confidence it won’t,” said Emanuel.

A new map needs to win support from 41 of Chicago’s 50 aldermen to be approved.

City wards are redrawn after every new census.
