Last week Pakistani activist Sabeen Mahmud was murdered in Lahore, just after she finished giving a talk about Baluchistan, a province where separatists have been fighting for independence. Many people have disappeared in that bloody conflict and it’s a topic the government does not want discussed. Mahmud was famous for the cafe space she founded, T2F, which was known for its art exhibits, concerts and readings. Chicago actor and comedian Fawzia Mirza performed her one woman show at T2F in April. Sabeen Mahmud was instrumental in bringing Fawzia’s show to Pakistan, a play about a first generation American woman looking for acceptance as a queer, Muslim woman. Fawzia Mirza joins us to share memories of her friend Sabeen and to talk about free speech in Pakistan. (Photo: Courtesy of Fawzia Mirza)
